Upward Bound

Upward Bound

The Upward Bound project at 911ϳԹϺ is a college preparation grant program for high school students in the communities surrounding Russellville. The program focuses on giving students in the River Valley a first-hand college experience through tutoring, advising, and an intense summer residential program.

Students who graduate from Upward Bound programs are more likely to succeed academically in high school and college. Upward Bound and several other similar programs were originally established by the federal government in 1965 to ensure equal educational opportunity for all Americans, regardless of race, ethnic background, or economic circumstance. In many communities, these programs are some of the only programs available that help students overcome the class, social, academic and cultural barriers to higher education.

The UB program at 911ϳԹϺ is committed to serving the students and families in our community to ensure success in high school and college.

Target high schools include:
  • Atkins High School
  • Dover High School
  • Hector High School
  • Johnson County Westside
  • Lamar High School

The Upward Bound program consists of two parts: tutoring services and mentorship during the academic school year and a six-week residential experience on the Arkansas Tech campus during the summer.

In the summer session, students live in Arkansas Tech residence halls and are taught by a team of university faculty, graduate students, and certified teachers in math, science, English, and more. Additionally, students develop computer skills using some of the latest technology, as well as reviewing skills needed for the ACT exam.

During the academic school year, students are visited weekly by a member of the UB staff completing assignments that are a part of the college application process. Tutoring services are also provided weekly for UB students.

One Saturday each month, the UB participants experience educational, cultural, and social activities and field trips.
